Let me tell you, even though there is a sea of typos, they are not major. At first, the material seemed pretty general, but it really went into details where necessary and skipped the fluff. I've read a lot about Pete Seeger, but had not seen anything on the other members of the group, so I was excited to hear about Lee. Write down all that you saw and did yesterday in the Black Hills. The musical language is extremely conservative: these were written at the end of Stalinism, and Shostakovich once again had to recant of the charge of "formalism" (the Stalinists preferred the tuneful and shallow music of Khachaturian where A-B-A forms predominate).The Preludes and Fugues are not even in quality: some are profound (C Major, E Major, F-Sharp Major, g minor, d minor); in others a neo-Baroque style predominates; in still others Shostakovich works around the strictures of Soviet Realism and creates some truly remarkable music (D Major, A Major, A-Flat Major). But visualizations can play an even more essential role in sparking important questions that would not have arisen otherwise. I would recommend anyone interested in folk music, Civil Rights and the government McCarthy era to read this book - it's a worthwhile biography
